Bone and Joint Health
Bone and Joint Health Action week is observed annually in October to raise awareness on the importance of preventing, diagnosing, and managing a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions including arthritis, osteoporosis, spinal disorders, trauma-related injuries, and pediatric bone and joint concerns.
As a healthcare professional, you play a vital role in the early detection and collaborative management of these frequently overlooked or undertreated conditions. You are encouraged to emphasize the following:
Routine Assessments
-
- Bone Density Screening: Order DEXA scans for women ≥65, men ≥70, and younger individuals with risk factors (e.g., family history, long-term steroid use, history of fractures).
- Arthritis Evaluation: Identify early signs of osteoarthritis and inflammatory arthropathies through symptom review, joint exams, and imaging where appropriate.
- Spinal Health: Evaluate for chronic back or neck pain, radiculopathy, postural abnormalities, and red flag symptoms (e.g., neurological deficits, unexplained weight loss).
- Fall Risk Assessment: Use validated tools such as the Timed Up and Go (TUG) test, assess home safety, and review medications that may contribute to balance issues.
Preventive Education and Preventive Counseling
-
- Regular Physical Activity: Weight-bearing and resistance exercises to maintain bone density and joint flexibility.
- Balanced Nutrition: Adequate intake of calcium and vitamin D.
- Smoking Cessation and Alcohol Moderation: Discuss lifestyle risks that contribute to bone loss and joint inflammation.
- Fall Prevention Strategies: Address environmental hazards at home, vision correction, strength/balance training programs.
Possible Treatment Approaches
-
- Osteoarthritis: Physical therapy, weight loss, analgesics, intra-articular corticosteroid injections.
- Osteoporosis: Bisphosphonates or other bone-preserving agents as indicated; ensure adequate intake of calcium and vitamin D; and implement fall-prevention strategies.
