April is National Stress Awareness Month, and let’s face it, most of us could use some help with stress reduction. Here are six tips to help you stress less.
- Allow for time for play. The National Institute for Play has found that engaging in silliness, fun, and just-for-pleasure activities reduces stress and increases optimism and resilience and can improve mental health.
- Move your body. Choose dance, walking, yoga, pickle ball, golf, or do whatever exercise you enjoy, and do it often. Remember, all HealthTeam Advantage members have access to a SilverSneakers® membership at no extra cost, so activate yours today! (Always check with your doctor before starting an exercise program.)
- Prioritize sleep. Getting enough sleep plays a significant role in managing stress, according to the National Sleep Foundation. Be sure to set a consistent bedtime, keep your bedroom cool and quiet, and avoid social media at bedtime.
- Connect with others. We are a social group. Even small interactions with others have been shown to decrease loneliness.
- Play with your pets. Aside from providing companionship, pets can help you manage anxiety, according to the American Heart Association.
- Visit your local library. Did you know that North Carolina has 741 local libraries? While you need a library card to check out materials, you can just stop by to use WiFi, read, attend events, or spend quiet time.
Select one or two of these activities and incorporate them into your daily routine or choose a different one each week and find what works best for you.
