Summer Safety Tips

As we kick off the summer season, it’s important to remember to practice safety outside the home. Here are a few safety tips while enjoying the outdoors:

  • Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen and reapply regularly, especially if sweating or in the water.
  • Stay hydrated! Avoid caffeinated or alcoholic beverages, as these can dehydrate you.
  • Wear a hat. A wider brim hat can provide added shade for your face and neck.
  • Wear sunglasses to shield your eyes.  (Read these tips for choosing the best sunglasses from the American Academy of Opthamology.)
  • Be mindful of your medications, which sometimes can cause increased sun sensitivity.
  • Avoid peak heat hours — between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. during the summer in North Carolina.
  • When having a picnic, make sure food is stored at the proper temperature.
  • Always wear shoes that fit and are comfortable.
  • Never go barefoot. A sting by an insect that enjoys the look of your lawn could ruin your day. If you’re going to the beach, you may enjoy the sand between your toes, but you will not enjoy the burn from the sand or a broken shell cutting your foot.

None of these are meant to deter you from enjoying the summertime, but to allow you to enjoy your summer adventures!

Know the warning signs

Be wary of heat stroke and other heat-related health risks. Look for these signs:

  • confusion
  • dry skin
  • appearing disoriented
  • tiring easily
  • frequent and severe headaches
  • nausea
  • lethargy
  • quickening pulse

If you find yourself experiencing these symptoms, get out of the heat and contact your doctor immediately.
