Have Fun in the Sun — Safely

“Summer was our best season: it was sleeping on the back screened porch in cots, or trying to sleep in the treehouse; summer was everything good to eat; it was a thousand colors in a parched landscape . . .” —Harper Lee, To Kill a Mockingbird

There’s no shortage of fun things to do in the summer. But whether you’re at the beach or in your backyard, it’s important to be careful in the hot summer sun. Here are a few reminders to help you stay safe.

Sun Protection

All sunscreens are not created equal. Select one for a broad spectrum with an SPF of at least 30. Look for a formula that is hydrating and gentle on sensitive skin. Mineral sunscreens with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are good options for sensitive skin.

The general rule of thumb is to reapply sunscreen every two hours when you are out in the sun, more frequently if you are swimming or sweating. Be generous to your skin!

Consider wearing lightweight, long-sleeved clothing, and wide-brimmed hats in the sun.

Limit time in direct sunlight between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when UV rays are strongest

A common misconception is that clouds block all harmful UV (Ultraviolet) rays. This is not true! Clouds only partially filter UV radiation, and significant amounts can still reach the Earth’s surface. So wear your sunglasses even on a cloudy summer day.

Staying Hydrated

It’s important to stay hydrated all year long, of course, but you may need to up your water intake when it’s hot outside. Get tips for staying hydrated on our blog.

Common Sun-Sensitive Medications

Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are currently taking a type of medication that may make you more sensitive to the sun’s rays. These include:

  • Diuretics: (“water pills”) LASIX, HCTZ
  • Cardiovascular drugs: Statins such as Atorvastatin, Antiarrhythmic Drugs
  • Anti-inflammatory drugs: NSAIDS such as Ibuprofen, Naproxen
  • Antibiotics: Doxycycline, Ciprofloxacin
  • Antidepressants: Zoloft, Lexapro
  • Diabetic medications: Check with your pharmacist.

PLEASE NOTE: This is not a complete list of drugs that may interact with sunlight, so be sure to check with your doctor or pharmacist.
