According to the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, 8 in 10 adults who are 65 or older in our state live with one or more chronic diseases. If you are living with a chronic condition, we want you to live your best life! Here are some tips to help.
Physical and Mental Health
- Get regular exercise. (If you’re not already active with activities such as walking, swimming, biking, or pickleball, check with your doctor before starting.)
- Eat healthy foods. Ask your doctor about nutritional requirements, such as including fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and low-fat dairy and healthy fats. Limit saturated and trans fats, sodium, and added sugars.
- Keep your mind stimulated. Activities such as reading, learning new skills, playing games, and pursuing hobbies can help preserve memory and thinking skills.
- Get regular check-ups and screenings.
- Get quality sleep. Aim for 7–8 hours of sleep per night to support overall health and well-being.
Strong Social Connections
Social connections are essential for both mental and physical health. Research indicates a link between social isolation/loneliness and increased risks of depression, cognitive decline, and chronic conditions.
It’s important to spend time with family and friends, and to stay connected even if it’s only by phone or video. Don’t fall out of touch just because the weather is changing! Here are some ideas for North Carolina activities to keep you busy this fall:
- Visit a local pumpkin patch or apple orchard.
- Take a drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway and experience the fall foliage.
- Schedule a train ride with the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad during the fall foliage season.
- Experience the “Dry Falls” located in the Nantahala Forest, between Franklin and the Highlands.
- Take an arts and craft workshop to create a one-of-a-kind gift for a family member or friend.
One more suggestion for living your best life: If you have not had your Annual Wellness Visit yet, be sure to schedule before the weather gets too cold. Reach out to your Healthcare Concierge if you need help with scheduling.
