Here’s an important reminder as the cold weather approaches: Check on home safety!
Fall Prevention
- Keep pathways in the home clear of loose cords, small items, or any clutter.
- Ensure carpeting is secured to the floor and avoid area rugs.
- Improve lighting inside and out. Use nighttime lighting on staircases and motion sensor lights for dark hallways.
- Make sure you have grab bars and nonslip mats in the bathroom for any wet floors.
- Be sure all handrails are secure inside and out.
- Think twice before getting up on a chair or step ladder, even a small one, especially if you are home alone. Nothing you need to reach is worth an emergency room and hospital stay because you have fallen and fractured a hip!
Fire Safety
- Check the batteries on your smoke alarms and Carbon Monoxide detectors.
- Make sure you have a fire extinguisher in the kitchen and check the expiration date.
- Be sure the hot water is set no higher than 120℉.
- If you burn candles, keep them away from curtains, furniture, etc. Always extinguish them if you’re leaving the area.
Last but not least, enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday with family and friends — and make plans to keep in touch after the holiday is over!
