Walk Your Way to a Healthier You

Walking has many health benefits, from helping you maintain a healthy weight to lowering blood pressure and cholesterol, boosting your memory, and reducing your risk for heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. It can even help your mood.1 Here’s what you need to know to walk your way to better health.  

Celebrate National Walking Month with a little movement. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends older adults get 150 minutes of moderate intensity exercise each week. If that seems too much, start small – even a one-minute walk can provide benefits.1   

Turn your gait into a fitness stride 

Knowing the benefits is just the beginning. Next, you’ll want to make sure you have the right technique. Here are some tips to help you get the most out of your walks:2 

  • Keep your head up – look forward, not at the ground. 
  • Keep your body relaxed, specifically your neck, shoulders, and back. 
  • Swing your arms freely with a slight bend in your elbows. 
  • Keep your core engaged and your back straight, not arched forward or backward. 
  • Walk smoothly from heel to toe.
