It’s that time of year again — Daylight Saving Time. While the first day or two after we “spring forward” can be challenging, the extra light in spring and summer offers more time for outside activities. Here are some ideas to get you started.
1. Walk or Hike at a Local Park
As the evenings get longer, use the time to socialize while you exercise. Ask a friend to be your walking buddy and motivate each other. Or join a hiking club to meet others who enjoy being outdoors! Here’s one in Greensboro.
2. Plan a Picnic
Speaking of local parks, how about taking your dinner outside? Having a picnic with friends is a fun way to get some fresh air, or keep things simple and eat in your backyard with the grandkids. If you’re looking for inspiration, here are some healthy options you can try.
3. Plant Some Flowers
If you like flowers but don’t like the heat, plant in the spring! (Check this map for the average last spring freeze date in your county.) Enjoy the extra daylight and give your yard some color that you can enjoy all summer long. Not sure what to plant? Check out these ideas from the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at NC State.
4. Play Pickleball
April is National Pickleball Month, so it’s a good time to try this popular activity. SilverSneakers® can help you get started with these articles on the basics of pickleball and the health benefits of the game. (Remember, all HealthTeam Advantage plans include a SilverSneakers membership, so activate yours today!)
5. Become a Bird Watcher
Here’s a hobby you can do from the mountains to the coast — or in your own yard! Birding can help you appreciate all the beautiful nature that North Carolina has to offer. The National Audubon Society offers free NC bird watching resources, including tips for getting started, links to birding clubs, and popular birding spots all over the state.
6. Try Photography
If enjoy taking photos, the extra daylight makes it easier to take advantage of “golden hour,” or the last hour before sunset. Because the natural light is softer at this time of day, it’s ideal for photography. Here are some tips from Adobe if you’d like to give it a try. (And if you’re a morning person, the hour after sunrise has the same effect.)
7. See an Outdoor Concert
There’s nothing like an outdoor concert when the weather is nice. Many communities offer free concerts in the summer months, so you can bring a chair and make an evening of it. HealthTeam Advantage is a proud sponsor of Greensboro’s Music for a Sunday Evening in the Park series. Check your city or town’s website for concerts near you.
