As we kick off the summer season, it’s important to remember to practice safety outside the home. Here are a few safety tips while enjoying the outdoors:
- Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen and reapply regularly, especially if sweating or in the water.
- Stay hydrated! Avoid caffeinated or alcoholic beverages, as these can dehydrate you.
- Wear a hat. A wider brim hat can provide added shade for your face and neck.
- Wear sunglasses to shield your eyes.
- Be mindful of your medications, which sometimes can cause increased sun sensitivity.
- Avoid peak heat hours — between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. during the summer in North Carolina.
- When attending or having a picnic, be mindful of the food temperatures that need to be maintained.
- Always wear shoes that fit and are comfortable.
- Never go barefoot. A sting by an insect that enjoys the look of your lawn could ruin your day. If you’re going to the beach, you may enjoy the sand between your toes, but you will not enjoy the burn from the sand or a broken shell cutting your foot.
None of these are meant to deter you from enjoying the summertime, but to allow you to enjoy your summer adventures!
